Summary of the Medea Tragedy by Euripides

The plot of the Greek poet Euripides Medea tragedy is convoluted and messy, rather like its antihero, Medea. It was first performed at the Dionysian Festival in 431 BCE, where it famously won third (last) prize against entries by Sophocles and Euphorion. In the opening scene, the nurse/narrator tells us that Medea and Jason have lived together for some time as husband and wife in Corinth, but theirs is a troubled union. Jason and Medea met at Colchis, where King Pelias had sent him to capture the magical golden fleece from Medeas father King Aaetes. Medea saw and fell in love with the handsome young hero, and so, despite her fathers desire to retain possession of the precious object, helped Jason to escape. The couple fled first Medeas Colchis, and then after Medea was instrumental in the death of King Pelias at Iolcos, fled that region, finally arriving at Corinth. Medea Is Out, Glauce Is In At the opening of the play, Medea and Jason are already the parents of two children during their life together, but their domestic arrangement is about to end. Jason and his father-in-law-to-be, Creon, tell Medea that she and her children must leave the country so that Jason may marry Creons daughter Glauce in peace. Medea is blamed for her own fate and told that if she hadnt behaved like a jealous, possessive woman, she could have remained in Corinth. Medea asks for and is granted one days reprieve, but King Creon is fearful, and rightly so. During that one days time, Medea confronts Jason. He retaliates, blaming Medeas banishment on her own temper. Medea reminds Jason of what she has sacrificed for him and what evil she has done on his behalf. She reminds him that since she is from Colchis and is, therefore, a foreigner in Greece and without a Greek mate, she will not be welcome anywhere else. Jason tells Medea that he has given her enough already, but that he will recommend her to the care of his friends (and he has many as witnessed by the gathering of the Argonauts). Jasons Friends and Medeas Family Jasons friends need not be bothered because as it turns out Aegeus of Athens arrives and agrees that Medea may find refuge with him. With her future assured, Medea turns to other matters. Medea is a witch. Jason knows this, as do Creon and Glauce, but Medea seems appeased. She presents a wedding gift to Glauce of a dress and crown, and Glauce accepts them. The theme of poisoned clothing should be familiar to those who know of  the death of Hercules. When Glauce puts on the robe it burns her flesh. Unlike Hercules, she immediately dies. Creon dies, too, trying to help his daughter. Although thus far, Medeas motives and reactions seem at least understandable, then Medea does the unspeakable. She slaughters her own two children. Her revenge comes when she witnesses Jasons horror as she flies off to Athens in the chariot of the sun god Helios (Hyperion), her ancestor.

Teaching Myself Good Work Habits - 734 Words

For my experiment, I’m going to be training myself. I will be teaching myself how to work out without taking it lightly and without missing a day. I’m going to teach myself that with good habits I can do whatever I want. Normally, I’m lazy so I don’t like to go to the gym if it’s not mandatory but for this experiment I’m going to force myself. For this experiment, I will be using the positive reinforcement so after I go to the gym I’m going to get an award. I choose the positive reinforcement over the others because with this method it will help my behavior to be repeated. By using the negative reinforcement, I’m going to have to remove an unpleasant stimulus if I don’t go to the gym and I won’t be motivate. By putting a punishment it can decrease the frequency of my behavior. My reinforce after going to the gym will be my friend has to cook for me at night, because I’m always hungry at night, I don’t know how to cook and the cafeteria is close, so I got my friend helping me. My reinforce is going to be considering as a primary reinforce because it is a naturally reinforcing. My schedule of reinforcement will be the fixed interval. It will reinforce the first response after a fixed time period that will be every time I finish working out. I choose this schedule of reinforcement over the others because in the fixed-ratio schedules I didn’t like that fact that after a certain number I get my reinforce. Parking Problems

Answer: Secondary Source Article With the aim of seeking solutions as to how the parking system could operate more efficiently by using new technologies and new methodologies, this paper discusses the application of geographic information system into the parking planning and management. The concentration of this paper includes the characteristics of parking demand and the causations of parking problems, especially the basic parking principle and strategies for solving parking problems. The disparity between the rapid increment of motor vehicle and limited new parking facilities results the parking difficulty directly. The lack of professional parking management is another issue in parking problems. During the period of commuting time, a large part of cars are driven out from garages and need parking lots afterwards, and thus, the accumulated time for parking is comparatively long, that is, demand for parking stays at specific time intervals in the morning and afternoon whereas parking supply is evenly distributed al l day. On parking planning, the need for new parking facilities should best be considered with due regard to the existing nearby parking facilities (Chiou Chen, 2014). The most successful, long term, low-income housing projects are those that use sustainable design and address the social, cultural, and economic needs of residents.. A community with a sustainably designed project often views the project in a more favorable light than they would a traditionally built housing project, enabling residents to become part of the community instead of being treated as pariahs (Marin). Studies show that people living in sustainable housing projects move less frequently, and have positive feelings about their homes. Susan King, a principle at the architecture firm Harvey Devereaux in Chicago commented on the benefits to the community and to residents that come with a green housing project, saying, ?In cases where the developer promotes the green aspects of a building to the community and also educates the people who live there on these features, the building starts to be known for these qualities. This can start to override the stigma often associated with low-income housing and even serving as a point of pride for those who live there? (Marin). Most people who live in government subsidized housing projects also rely on government assistance for health care. Evidence shows again and again that traditionally built housing projects in major cities are breeding grounds for disease, plagued with violence, and terribly stressful for the people who inhabit them. High stress living environments can add to a myriad of physical problems as well as psychological problems including depression, and in children behavioral, emotional and cognitive problems. The toll all of these factors have on childhood development often causes lasting, lifelong health problems whose expense will almost certainly fall on the government, and ultimately on the tax payers of this country. On adult we see an elevated mortality rate compared to the rest of the country, and high rates of cardio-vascular maladies, related to high stress and poor quality food (Rosenthal; Acevedo-Garcia; Spielman). Essentially, the traditionally built housing projects our governm ent has used to house very poor and low-income citizens are costing the government additional dollars in health care, and costing the residents of these projects their health. The system for low-income housing our government has implemented is failing on several levels. The need for a new approach is evident, and the solutions that sustainable design can offer present economic, humanitarian, ecological, healthy, and aesthetic improvements to the norm. As sustainable low-income housing projects are received with welcome into different communities, they act as important catalysts for integration. The segregation of poor people into predominately poor neighborhoods is a major factor shown to adversely affect those residents? health. In 1994, the program Moving to Opportunity (MTO) began studying very low-income families with children, randomly assigning participants into three groups. The control group would remain living in public housing, the second group was assigned unrestricted Section 8 vouchers, and the experimental group was given housing vouchers that were only good in low-poverty neighborhoods and were given free housing-search counseling (Acevedo-Garcia). Educational and employment outcomes, health, and reliance on public assistance were all documented over the years (Acevedo-Garcia). ?The latest evaluation report by HUD showed that girls in the experimental group--i.e., those who moved to low-poverty neighborhoods--had im proved mental health and a lower risk of using marijuana and smoking than girls who stayed in public housing. Adults in the experimental group experienced significantly lower obesity than those in public housing, and lower prevalence of mental health problems (psychological distress and depression)? Some of the factors looked at for the reason for these results were: the effect of higher quality living spaces, lower stress levels from witnessing or fearing crime, and access to better institutional amenities like schools, healthcare and childcare facilities (Acevedo-Garcia).
